6 Best Foundations for Oily Skin

I remember back in 2010, when you could go on YouTube and actually learn about the best makeup products on the market. Now all you hear about are the newest makeup products, or the “best oily skin foundations of 2026.” I don’t care about the best foundation that came out this year! I care about the best foundation for my skin, period.

Does this rant make me sound old? I don’t care.

That’s why I’m here to tell you which foundations are truly the best out there for oily skin. Not just the best foundations that came out this year or last, but the actual best foundations on the market.

Every product comparison is based on the author’s own hands-on experience, independent research, and honest judgment. No brand pays for placement, praise, or a prettier seat at the table.

Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Longwear Matte Foundation
Bobbi Brown Weightless Skin Oil-Controlling Foundation SPF 15 with Hyaluronic Acid
Revlon ColorStay Makeup Combination Oily Skin
Long Wearing
Extremely long wearing- she won’t budge until you double cleanse.
Almost as long-wearing as the Estée Lauder Double Wear, this will stay on all day and night.
Not quite as long wearing as the Estée Lauder Double Wear, but this one will easily last you a full work day and then some.
Oil Control
Very oil controlling. This foundation will keep your oils in check and stay transfer-proof all day, even if you use blotting sheets.
This foundation isn’t as oil controlling as the other two top picks, but it also won’t leave you looking like a disco ball mid-day.
Like the Estée Lauder Double Wear, this foundation is transfer-proof and will keep your oils under control all day.
Lightweight
You can definitely feel this foundation, but it doesn’t feel overly heavy.
Feels like you’re wearing nothing.
You’ll know you’re wearing foundation, but it wears comfortably throughout the day.
Coverage
Very full coverage.
Medium, buildable coverage.
Medium, buildable coverage.

In my super oily days, I would get foundation recommendations from friends who also claimed to be oily, only to realize that they were the same foundations that I had tried and been disappointed by. That’s when I learned that there is a spectrum of oily skin.

The best foundation for you will depend on the type of coverage that you’re looking for and how oily your skin gets.

  • Estée Lauder Double Wear is a long-time favorite for oily skin girlies. It’s super oil controlling, has full coverage, and stays on all day without transferring. This year it was reformulated and I actually like the new version better than the original. It’s a little bit thinner and more lightweight, but still super oil-controlling.
  • Bobbi Brown Weightless Skin Oil-Controlling Foundation leaves a beautiful semi-matte finish on the skin. If your skin gets oily throughout the day but you don’t like a super matte finish, this is a great choice. This foundation includes SPF 15- added bonus!
  • In my oiliest days, Revlon ColorStay was my ride-or-die because it stays on all day without transferring, it’s buildable, and it’s natural-looking. It’s also hard to get off at the end of the day, so you’ll definitely need to use a micellar water or cleansing balm before your face wash. If you’re looking for a budget option that will keep you matte all day and won’t come off until you want it to, this is the foundation for you.

You might have noticed that I included some OG foundations in this article. All I can say is this: they work. That’s why they’ve been around so long.

Here are some honorable mentions:

Erborian BB Cream Velvet Matte Beauty Balm with SPF 20
7.5 Overall Score
> > > > >
Long Wearing 7.0
Oil Control 7.0
Lightweight 10.0
Coverage 6.0

pros

  1. Lightweight
  2. Has SPF
  3. Cruelty-free
  4. Non-comedogenic

cons

  1. Very limited color range
  2. Doesn’t control oil as well as other foundations
  3. Less coverage than a traditional foundation

The Erborian BB Cream gives really good, buildable coverage and looks very natural. This is perfect to use for daily wear – just add a bit of concealer for any imperfections and you’re ready to go. It only comes in four shades, so you might have to mix two of them to get your perfect shade.

I’ve tried so many BB and CC creams, but most of them end up making my skin feel super oily and weighed down (Tarte and IT Cosmetics—I’m looking at you). This is the only one that controls my oil and doesn’t break me out.

Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra 24H Long Wear Matte Foundation
7.8 Overall Score
> > > > >
Long Wearing 9.0
Oil Control 7.0
Lightweight 7.0
Coverage 8.0

pros

  1. Buildable coverage
  2. Natural finish
  3. Large shade range

cons

  1. Doesn’t control oil as well as other options.
  2. Can feel a bit heavy after many hours of wear.

This foundation is similar to the Bobbi Brown Weightless Skin Oil-Controlling Foundation in that it has buildable coverage and leaves a semi-matte finish on the skin. I prefer the Bobbi Brown foundation because it feels slightly more lightweight than this one.

Fenty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation
8.3 Overall Score
> > > > >
Long Wearing 8.0
Oil Control 9.0
Lightweight 8.0
Coverage 8.0

pros

  1. Very mattifying
  2. Large shade range
  3. Buildable coverage
  4. Cruelty-free

cons

  1. Can be drying
  2. Oxidizes

This is another favorite for super oily girls. I love that it’s cruelty-free and mattifying. If you have really oily skin, this is a great alternative to Estée Lauder Double Wear. Just be aware that this foundation tends to oxidize, so you might want to go for a shade lighter than you usually wear.

A lot of people with oily skin also get acne, so all of the foundations in this article are non-comedogenic. Using a mattifying foundation and setting powder to control oil is a great way to reduce breakouts.

That being said, wearing foundation can clog your pores. That’s why it’s super important to double cleanse at night!

Frequently asked questions

If you have really oily skin, I recommend Fenty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Foundation or Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation. I would say that the Fenty foundation is just slightly more oil controlling than Estée Lauder.
The Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation has the most coverage straight out of the bottle, and the Fenty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Foundation is definitely a close second. The Bobbi Brown Weightless Skin Foundation, Revlon ColorStay Foundation, and Lancôme Teint Idole Foundation are all medium coverage but can easily be built up to high coverage.
I’ve realized that wearing different moisturizers changes how my foundation performs. If you’re oily, make sure that you’re using a lightweight moisturizer. Another trick for keeping foundation matte is to apply foundation with a damp sponge. Sponges give great coverage and a natural look. The last thing is to always use a setting powder. Apply it with a sponge and let it sit for a bit before brushing it off.
All of the foundations that I listed are non-comedogenic, so they shouldn’t break you out. I tend to break out the most when my skin has oils sitting on it. If you’re worried about acne, go with one of the more mattifying foundations, or just make sure to blot your oils often during the day!
A lot of people with oily skin think that using a powder foundation is the best option because they think that it will absorb their oil. In my experience, though, the powder foundations with good coverage actually break my skin out more than mattifying liquid foundations. They also don’t tend to wear as well. Does anyone remember the old L'Oréal True Match Powder Foundation? That one had beautiful coverage but was not acne-safe. Same with bareMinerals. For oily skin, especially if you’re prone to breakouts, stay away from cream foundations. They’re thick, and the ingredients in them are more likely to cause acne and make you even oilier.
To make sure that you’re getting all of your makeup off, use a cleansing balm or micellar water before using a face wash. I also recommend using a silicone face scrubber with your face wash, because it helps to gently scrub off any stubborn foundation.
